Compellent Customer, London Borough of Hillingdon, Wins "Network Project of the Year" at the 2009 UK Network Computing Awards

March 30, 2009

Commends 97 Percent Reduction in Server Hardware Footprint, 20 Percent Cut in Carbon Emissions and 45 Percent Saving on Disk Space Requirements

LONDON, UK, 30th March 2009 – Compellent Technologies today announced that one of its UK customers, the London Borough of Hillingdon, has won the “Network Project of the Year” award at the 2009 Network Computing Awards. Other public sector finalists included the North Lincolnshire NHS Trust and the Notting Hill Housing Group.

Hillingdon, which is amongst the capital’s largest local authorities, won the award for implementing two Compellent storage area networks (SANs) and a VMware virtual server environment to deal with its 100 per cent year-on-year data growth.

Key results include:

· Savings of £20,000 a year by dramatically reducing power consumption from 34kWh to 1.1 kWh

· Savings of £50,000 by removing the need to expand the IT team to manage storage

· Savings of £6,500 in annual power costs by migrating infrequently accessed data from high-performance Fibre Channel disks to less expensive, energy-efficient SATA storage

· A 97 percent reduction in server hardware

· A 45 percent reduction in disk space requirements

Roger Bearpark, Assistant Head of ICT for the London Borough of Hillingdon, comments: “The award recognises the way in which we use Compellent’s SAN to asynchronously replicate space-efficient, continuous snapshots between our two sites. This provides disaster recovery functionality at a fraction of the cost of other replication solutions.”

Compellent’s technology also provides disaster recovery for the local health authority, Hillingdon Primary Care Trust (PCT). The PCT’s data is stored on the secondary SAN - the disaster recovery target for the borough - while the borough’s primary SAN acts as the backup site for the PCT’s data. In addition, Compellent’s automated storage chargeback feature allows Hillingdon to recover operating costs in the not-for-profit agreement with the PCT.

Andy Hardy, managing director of international sales at Compellent, said: "Once again, Compellent has demonstrated that its technology delivers a host of tangible cost saving, efficiency and environmental benefits. The Hillingdon implementation also highlights the full extent to which Compellent’s and VMware’s virtualization solutions work in harmony to deliver an integrated and easily-manageable server and storage environment.”

Hillingdon’s virtual server and storage environment was architected, designed and deployed by Fordway Solutions, a Compellent channel partner, and one of the UK's leading enterprise management, data storage, IP networking and IT infrastructure specialists.
