Bankadati Rebuilds IT Infrastructure on Scalable Fluid Data Storage from Compellent
Milan – 7 April 2010 — Compellent today announced that Bankadati Servizi Informatici, the company that guards organisation and technologies for the Credito Valtellinese Group, one of the largest Italian banking groups, has implemented a Fluid Data™ environment with the award-winning Compellent storage area network (SAN) as the foundation. Based on a modular, flexible architecture with room for expansion, Compellent’s technology enables simplified storage management and reduced TCO.
With more than 4500 employees, Credito Valtellinese Group has expanded steadily throughout Italy in recent years following a series of acquisitions and bank counters’ openings. Bankadati S.I., with the objective to follow the Group growth programme, rebuilt its departmental IT infrastructure by deploying VMware’s ESX Enterprise virtualisation technology and completely redesigning its two data centres, based in Sondrio and in Milan (more than 100km apart). Once the first level was built (server virtualisation), the company focused on expanding the pre-existent legacy storage solution that had reached capacity limits.

Bankadati’s previous storage solution required deep technical expertise to be effectively managed; this solution was very hard to modify and caused downtimes that were sometimes incompatible with the business continuity needs. Compellent’s solution has eliminated these difficulties, allowing the IT team to focus on strategic business issues.
Another important feature for Bankadati S.I. is Compellent’s automated tiered storage, which allows the company to intelligently, actively manage and reconfigure storage in a dynamic way, using high performance storage resources only when the data is active. Data that is not frequently accessed, including at least 70 percent of emails, is dynamically transferred to cheaper, less power-hungry SATA disks. Compellent ensures that the right balance in storage resources is found automatically, saving a significant amount of time.
