Compellent Customer, London Borough of Hillingdon, Wins "Environmental Project of the Year" Award

LONDON, UK, 26th April 2010 – Compellent customer, the London Borough of Hillingdon, has won the “Environmental Project of the Year” award in the Public Sector category at the 2010 Green IT Awards. The awards are sponsored by Green IT Magazine.

Hillingdon, which is amongst the UK’s largest local authorities, won the award for implementing two Compellent storage area networks (SANs) and a VMware virtual server environment to deal with its 100 per cent year-on-year data growth. Key benefits include: 97 percent reduction in server hardware; 45 percent reduction in disk space requirements; reduced power consumption from 34kWh to 1.1 kWh; and annual energy savings in excess of £25,000.

Roger Bearpark, Assistant Head of ICT for the London Borough of Hillingdon, comments: “The award recognises the way in which we use Compellent’s SAN to slash our storage requirements and subsequently our energy usage. We’ve introduced a highly efficient infrastructure that is not only green but, crucially for our bottom line, also reduces our operating costs.”

Compellent’s Fluid Data architecture provides the storage foundation for server virtualisation, allowing customers like Hillingdon to automate movement and management of data at a granular level, and ultimately reduces power and cooling costs. By further integrating technologies such as automated tiered storage, thin provisioning and space-efficient snapshots to reduce reliance on high-energy storage, Compellent customers can deploy a feature-rich, greener data centre.

Andy Hardy, managing director of international sales at Compellent, said: "We’re delighted that Hillingdon has received such as prestigious green accolade. The Hillingdon implementation highlights the full extent to which Compellent’s and VMware’s virtualisation solutions work together to significantly lower storage and infrastructure capital expenditures, while delivering against important corporate environmental objectives.”

Hillingdon’s storage environment was architected, designed and deployed by Fordway Solutions who were also responsible for integrating the Compellent solution with the VMware infrastructure and delivering the vSphere enhancements to complete the current award winning setup.
