Compellent Customers Lead the Industry in Adoption of Automated Tiered Storage

Mature, Self-Managing Automated Tiering Technology Used by 73 Percent of Its Customers Due to Significant Cost and Time Savings

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., July 27, 2010 – As automated tiered storage technology becomes more prevalent in enterprise data centers, IT departments are taking a closer look at how to save time and money by automatically migrating data. A recent custom research study conducted by Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) shows that Compellent customers worldwide have a higher usage rate of automated tiered storage compared to customers of other vendors.

Compellent customers rely on its sophisticated and proven automated tiered storage technology to help them significantly reduce storage costs, increase utilization and automatically migrate the majority of their data to lower-cost, high-capacity drives, keeping the high-performance drives for the frequently accessed data.

The survey was conducted with more than 400 mid-range storage array users, comprising 206 Compellent customers and a multi-vendor sample of 234 non-Compellent users. According to the results:

  • Nearly three quarters (73 percent) of Compellent customers currently take advantage of automated tiered storage capabilities.
  • Compellent users are more than 6 times as likely to use automated tiered storage on 100 percent of their volumes due to the ease of implementation and management of the automated tiering feature.
  • Compellent customers spend significantly less time managing the automated tiered storage process. About three quarters (74 percent) of Compellent customers spend less than an hour a week managing the dynamic migration of their data compared to just 10 percent of other vendors’ customers.
  • Other vendors’ customers are 15 times more likely than Compellent users to spend six hours or more per week managing their tiered storage implementation.

The benefits of Compellent Fluid Data storage and intelligent, automatic data migration are seen across many different industries, implementations and businesses. Barry Thomas, system engineer for Graves-Gilbert Clinic, told ESG that he has been able to dramatically reduce storage costs with Compellent and automated tiered storage for his business and healthcare-specific applications.

“Compellent's automated tiered storage feature coupled with virtualized storage, Fluid Data architecture, snapshots and thin provisioning has enabled the Graves-Gilbert team to reduce the number of tier-one drives, saving an estimated $500,000 in storage costs,” said Thomas, who turned to Ohio Valley Storage Consultants to implement a Compellent storage system. “The Clinic's picture archiving and communication system (PACS) significantly benefitted from the automated tiering technology. Once created the diagnostic images never change and are essentially archival. Fluid Data technology helps us manage the PACS data by automatically prioritizing and progressing infrequently accessed data to cheaper disks."

Among other customers surveyed by ESG, Credit Market Analysis (CMA) in the UK discussed how the ease of setting up automated tiered storage allowed the company to purchase fewer high-performance drives, reduce storage costs and boost system performance.

“The work involved in establishing the automated tiered storage profiles was really low and has meant that we are able to buy about half of the 15K drives we would have needed otherwise,” said Ryan Sclanders, infrastructure services manager for CMA who worked closely with JCOM to implement his Compellent system. “Using this automated tiered storage feature allows us to keep frequently accessed data on the fastest Fibre Channel storage, while archive information finds its level on SATA. Not only has Compellent cut administration time and reduced overall storage costs, it also boosted performance of critical applications — automatically.”

Compellent automated tiered storage is fully integrated into the storage array and works seamlessly with other enterprise-class features, like continuous snapshots, thin provisioning and optimized data placement. Compellent is unique in its approach to granular automated tiering, allowing customers to dynamically move blocks of data back and forth across different spindle speeds, drive types, including SSD, SAS, FC and SATA, and RAID levels, including RAID 10, RAID 5 and RAID 6.

Additional quotes:

  • Scott Horst, vice president of corporate marketing, Compellent:
“Since 2005, Compellent has been delivering a sophisticated and intelligent automated tiered storage platform that drives efficiency to new levels. Our customers buy less disk upfront and less expensive disk over time while enjoying a zero-touch method of managing  the over abundance of data in their businesses. Thousands of successful customer implementations are driving a new era of storage economics.”

  • Mark Peters, senior analyst, ESG:
“Compellent is a pioneer of automated tiered storage technology. Its Fluid Data platform was built to maximize overall system efficiency and to deliver performance and cost savings to its customers through the intelligent and automatic tiering of data. The results of ESG’s custom survey show an impressively high use of Compellent’s automated tiered storage feature by its base; this is probably due to not only the obvious cost and efficiency benefits, but also because customers can simultaneously benefit from other functions, such as thin provisioning and snapshots.”
