World Wildlife Fund Selects Compellent SAN to Speed Storage Administration and Ensure Rapid Data Recovery
Compellent's storage area network decreases administration time by 50 percent; reduces server recovery time from eight hours to 30 minutes
Minneapolis, May 15, 2006 — Compellent Technologies, a provider of affordable and modular enterprise storage solutions, today announced World Wildlife Fund has selected its Storage Center™ storage area network (SAN) to speed data storage management and ensure rapid disaster recovery. WWF’s new Compellent SAN has enabled it to cut storage administration time by 50% percent and decrease its server recovery time from eight hours to 30 minutes
As the world's largest privately financed conservation organization, World Wildlife Fund relies on its professional IT staff to manage and protect its data including email, fundraising presentations and library of high-resolution photography. World Wildlife Fund decided to implement a SAN when it became clear directattached storage could not scale with the organization’s requirements to simplify data management and quickly recover in the event of a data hazard or disaster.
“Whenever a photographer returned from a shoot, the additional 80 GB or more of images caused us to shuffle storage resources,” said Anne Topp, director, network services for World Wildlife Fund. “Additionally, last year’s annual disaster recovery test confirmed we needed a more reliable tool to safeguard our Exchange server. The Compellent SAN gives us both simplified management and continuous recovery in a single, affordable solution.”
Compellent’s Data Instant Replay enables World Wildlife Fund to roll back time and recover from potential data hazards in minutes by creating an unlimited number of space-efficient snapshots that allow instantaneous restoration of data through a simple point-and-click interface. Now, World Wildlife Fund takes a snapshot of its Exchange database every 2 hours without a capacity or cost penalty.
In the event of a server failure, Topp’s team can quickly create a new server from the golden boot image, mount the most recent replay to a new volume on the server and restore full services. As a result, World Wildlife Fund has been able to reduce its server recovery time from eight hours to 30 minutes.
After evaluating multiple systems, World Wildlife Fund worked closely with Mavenspire, an IT consulting firm serving the Baltimore / Washington metropolitan area, to select and implement the Compellent SAN. “With Storage Center, World Wildlife Fund has been able to minimize storage management costs and guarantee a rapid recovery in the event of a server failure or other disaster,” said Michael Tanenhaus, principal for Mavenspire.
