Compellent user and InfoWorld Green 15 honoree gm2 Logistics has confronted the challenge of greening its IT environment. “We always look for a green aspect,” explains John Boyd, IT manager at gm2. “We're not just green IT. We try to be a green company." Pairing two Compellent SANs with VMware, gm2 has consolidated 36 servers to just six blades and retired between 200 and 250 PCs.

InfoWorld's Green 15 honors the top 15 green technology initiatives undertaken by organizations in the past year. Compellent customer, gm2 Logistics, a warehousing and logistics company located near London, replaced its inefficient legacy storage system with two Compellent storage area networks (SANs) to create an IT infrastructure with high uptime and ensure business continuity. Compellent’s management of data inside the volume resulted in fewer storage drives required and helped the company shrink the data center footprint and consume less power. By pairing the Compellent SANs with VMware-based virtual servers, the company reduced its data center footprint by one-third and consolidated its 36 servers into six blade servers.

Storage magazine readers conducted by Diogenes Labs. The Compellent SAN was ranked no. 1 in product features, technical support and sales-force competence. According to the survey, 100 percent of Compellent customers would purchase their systems again. Commenting on Compellent’s Copilot support services, Community Health Plan IT Operations Manager Cary Dahl said, “Whether you call at 2 a.m. or 2 p.m., they’ve been very responsive.” Compellent beat out midrange storage systems from 14 other vendors including Dell/EqualLogic, Dell/EMC, EMC, HP, Hitachi, IBM, NetApp, and Sun.
