Compellent’s storage area network replaces tape during server recovery; reduces server recovery time from a full day to 15 minutes

Minneapolis, April 24, 2006 Compellent Technologies, a provider of affordable and modular enterprise storage solutions, today announced County of Orange Integrated Waste Management Department (IWMD) has selected its Storage Center® storage area network (SAN) to ensure continuous data availability for business operations by reducing the recovery window due to unplanned server failures from a full day to just 15 minutes.

IWMD manages the solid waste sites for all of Orange County, Calif., – including operations of open landfills, ongoing maintenance of closed landfills and construction of new sites. To accurately track incoming waste tonnage and provide billing information in real-time to haulers, the department requires uninterrupted operation of its servers and storage during business hours. IWMD needed to replace its previous SAN vendor in order to ensure maximum uptime and rapid recovery.

“During server upgrades it happened twice that a server failed to restart, knocking it offline for a day or more while we did a recovery from the tape backup,” said Pat Copland, senior technical systems specialist for IWMD. “Waste haulers run their businesses with the online transaction records we provide, so server uptime is very important. With the Compellent SAN in place, server recovery no longer has a major impact on our operations—we’re back online in less than fifteen minutes.”

Compellent’s Data Instant Replay enables IWMD to roll back time and recover from potential data hazards in minutes by creating an unlimited number of spaceefficient snapshots. IWMD boots all of its servers from the SAN. When a server fails, depending on the problem, IWMD can either quickly divert all volumes to another piece of hardware or roll back the operating system to a time prior to the disaster.

After evaluating multiple systems, IWMD worked closely with GDS2, a Compellent business partner, to select and implement the Compellent SAN. “Storage Center is providing IWMD the performance it requires to deliver a high level of service to its client by maintaining real-time availability of billing information to its customer base,” said Randy Miller, chief executive officer, GDS2.
